My FAVORITE 5 Cheeses for a Summer Party or Picnic

Brie Cheese Plate

One of my favorite outings on the weekends is visiting the neighborhood cheese shop.  It’s truly like a candy store for me! I have the pleasure of purchasing the cheeses and savoring the samples that are given me by the shop’s cheese connoisseur.

With dinner parties and picnics on the summer social calendar, I’ve had several opportunities to bring my favorite cheeses to share with friends and family.  If you enjoy cheese, I hope the following list is helpful for your next cheese selection.

1. Il Boschetto al Tartufo = An Italian mild semi-soft cheese, a blend of sheep and cow’s milk loaded with white truffle bits.  The heady aroma and delightful flavor will be enjoyed by all and is ALWAYS a hit at my dinner parties.

2. Havarti = A Danish semi-soft cow’s milk cheese with irregular holes throughout.  Havarti is named after the farm in Denmark where Hanne Nielsen first made the cheese.  I like this creamy textured cheese in a decadent panini sandwich.

Petit Basque

3. Petit Basque = Originating from France, a sheep’s milk cheese that is tightly textured with a fruity, olivey, and slightly woodsy flavor. Serves well as a picnic cheese with wafer crackers or baguette slices.

4. Manchego = A Spanish sheep’s milk cheese with a firm and buttery texture.  It is mild, slightly briny and has a nutty flavor.  Shaved slices top off a summer salad wonderfully.

5. Brie = Is best known French cow’s milk cheese and has the nickname “The Queen of Cheeses.” It is a great dessert cheese; try pairing it with a blackberry or fig jam for a sweet taste.  Double and triple cream bries are definitely a crowd pleaser!

I am asked quite frequently how to wear multiple necklaces to craft a fun and sophisticated layered look. I truly love to help women accessorize, so I decided to film this short video with Viviana M. Rueda and share my tips on how to wear layered necklaces and achieve versatile looks.

I hope you enjoy viewing our first video and are inspired to creatively layer necklaces in your jewelry wardrobe this summer!

May's favorite strand of white pearls

I’ve been honoring June’s birthstone – Pearls – this week by sharing information and photos of the gem along with offering a pearl promotion to our Twitter followers, Facebook Fans, and our MYJ members.  You probably have discovered by now that I have an extreme fondness and passion for pearls!

In high school, I received my first strand of white Majorica pearls from my parents and it was my father who gave me a lesson on the origin and quality of Majorica pearls.  My father emphasized over and over that it was a special strand of pearls and that it was only to be worn on special occasions. It was probably the most expensive piece of jewelry I owned at the time and truthfully, I wasn’t ever planning to wear the pearls except to please my father. Fast forward several years and I now love all types, sizes, colors, and shapes of pearls.

The Majorica pearl was first made on the Spanish Island of Majorca over a century ago and it has a close resemblance to natural pearls. Majorica pearls are man-made using a special iridescent glass bead as the pearl’s core. The glass bead is then coated on the surface with approximately 30 applied layers of a paste made of oil, fish scales, or mother-of–pearl.  The glass bead and natural layers replicate the surface and weight of a cultured pearl. The cost is a fraction of the price of a strand of cultured pearls.

Majorica pearls are a timeless fashion accessory that won’t break the bank!

An Inspiration – Liz Dennery Sanders

Me and Liz at her birthday celebration - April 2010

Liz and I met 5 years ago while serving together on the Los Angeles Board for Step Up Women’s Network – a national non-profit organization dedicated to connecting and advancing women and girls. As a devoted entrepreneur, Liz founded Dennery Marks, Inc. a national brand strategy and celebrity outreach firm.  Her true passion is helping women build a powerful personal brand from inside out and achieve their life dreams. I am confident Liz will achieve her own dream of touching and helping one million women around the world!

She’s a kindred spirit with a similar fondness for philanthropy, travel, wine, and of course, jewelry.  Over the years, Liz has continually given me jewelry design inspiration. I’m touched and thrilled that whenever I see her, she shares an idea or gives me tearsheets from fashion magazines of jewelry designs.

About 5 years ago, Liz received a coin pearl necklace from her husband along with a bag of 30 loose pearls. Liz asked me to collaborate on a few more timeless pieces with the remaining loose pearls to carry her from the office to evening events in confident style. I customized a handful of versatile pieces for not only Liz, but also her mother and mother-in-law. With Liz’s inspiration, creativity, and love for jewelry, was the birth of the Liz Collection – a modern and feminine coin pearl collection.

Michael Aram – Lotus Blossom Glass Tray & Tree of Life Serving Set

One of my favorite things to do at home is to host dinner parties with a group of good friends. I get SUPER excited for the visual set-up of my dining room table and which form of floral arrangement will be fitting for the theme of the party. I have to admit my husband thinks I’m crazy when I do mock-set ups the night before our guests arrive.

What I’ve come to realize over the years is that one can never have enough serving trays or sets when having a party. My lotus blossom glass tray is perfect for serving cheeses or cured meats and when it’s not in use, it’s a beautiful and modern decorative home accent on my buffet table. The tree of life serving set was a gift last holiday from a dear friend who truly understands how much I cherish home accessories.

Michael Aram is an American born artist who has lived and worked in India since 1989.  His work is a celebration of metalworking craft and handworking traditions where no pieces are ever exactly the same.

How to Wear Layered Bracelets with a Watch

May Yeung Jewelry – White Coral, Garnet, & Gold-Filled Link Chain Bracelets

I embraced the art of layering necklaces several years ago and this season, I’m ALL about layering multiple bracelets with my watch of choice.  Mixing different styles of bracelets, stone colors, textures, and styles is the accessorizing recipe for creating a unique layered look for your wrist.

Pictured is a combination of two stretchy bracelets and a gold filled oval link chain bracelet.  The white coral is light, porous, and mixed with a cubic zirconia pave ball.  The garnet semi-precious stones are smooth and opaque with a gold heart charm. The gold-filled link chain is weighty with a petite white freshwater coin pearl charm.

Be creative and have fun with layering bracelets and if you come across some bangles in your jewelry box, add them to the mix to complete your bracelet layered look!

Happy Layering!
