The Birth of MYJ
May’s interest and passion for jewelry started when she was a young girl while observing her mother getting dressed for a dinner or dance party. Whenever an opportunity arose, May would sneak into her parents’ bedroom and take a peek in the drawer that held her mother’s collection of costume jewelry. There were rows of white boxes lined up, and May remembered taking a liking to a silver pair of Monet textured knot earrings – a classic style. As a teenager, May joyfully accompanied her mother shopping and spent time together at the jewelry counter while her mom tried on an array of jewelry styles. May also noticed how happy her mom became after discovering the perfect bejeweled treasure to add to her jewelry collection.
It’s no surprise that May loves pearls. As a teenager, she received her first strand of white Majorica pearls from her parents. It was May’s father who gave her a lesson on the origin and quality of the Majorica pearl. He also taught her over the years how to appreciate and distinguish quality craftsmanship in jewelry and leather goods. In addition to her appeal for jewelry, May was influenced by her father and developed a fondness of leather accessories such as handbags, shoes and watches.
As a designer, May is constantly asked where she receives her creative inspiration. Her answer simply stated “the women in her life serve as her inspiration”. Growing up, May enjoyed watching and listening to her mom bond with her girlfriends over their weekly game of mahjong. Cherished and lifelong friendships were formed among the women while discussing their day’s events, families and children. May is continually inspired by all the women in her life - her sister Kathy, girlfriends, mentors and colleagues. The energy and passion from the entrepreneurial and intelligent women surrounding her have been empowering and invigorate May’s devotion to her craft. One of May’s favorite activities in her free time is meeting up with her friends over a glass of wine and engaging in conversation about their lives. Today, 10 years after the birth of MYJ, May continues the tradition of naming her collections each season after the women who have inspired her designs.
May is a strong believer in living a healthy and balanced life and recognizes the importance of balancing work and play for her well being. Life balance for May includes keeping a laser focus while managing her business, being creative, spending quality time with family and friends, and making time for herself. She is an avid yoga practitioner and has practiced regularly over the last 10 years. It is the moment she steps onto her mat before each practice that she is content, present and relaxed. Her dad’s words “in life you have to make time to work hard and play hard” is the motto that May holds daily close to her heart.
The combination of May’s love of jewelry and appreciation of elegantly crafted accessories, her creative inspiration from friends and female entrepreneurs, and her concentration on life balance have all contributed to who May embodies as a designer. May is truly grateful for all the women who have encouraged and supported her over the years. She is happiest when helping women feel beautiful, confident and “completing their timeless look”.
May resides in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, with her Structural Engineer husband of 12 years, Adam Greco, and their adorable and feisty dog, Yogi.
